WONKY ANATOMY
drawings by: Matthew Gruber

Lodge Gallery at Allied Works | 1532 SW Morrison

December 7th - December 24th
opening reception: Thursday December 10th, 6 - 8

When looking at my drawings, I hope you are able to realize how silly, wonky, and absurd our physical bodies really are. In creating these bodies, I am attempting to render the ugly parts with such care that they also become beautiful. There is an inherent contradiction between the labor-intensive drawing style and the forms that they represent. I use this absurd gesture in order to question contemporary notions of beauty and ugliness. By focusing on the parts of our bodies that we keep hidden away, I am attempting to set them free - free from liposuction, botox, and male enhancement pills. The next time you look in the mirror, lift up your shirt, and pinch your fuki belly, I hope you realize that you actually are ugly and it is beautiful.
